A One-Year Certificate Program in Advanced Psychotherapy Tailored for     Working Professionals

The Wayne Institute for Advanced Psychotherapy at Bellarmine University was founded by James (Jim) Wayne, BCD, LCSW, in 2015. As a long-time leader in politics and an advocate for mental health care professionals, Jim recognized the lack of rigorous continuing education opportunities available for busy therapists beyond board licensure. He understood, firsthand, the heavy workload these individuals were subjected to, and the growing number of therapists who were simply ‘burnt out’ just trying to keep up.
So, Jim decided to create something much deeper than a typical professional development seminar. He collaborated with other experienced therapists across the country, including Academic Director Dr. Patricia Gianotti, to develop an intensive one-year certificate program in Advanced Psychotherapy, tailored for working professionals. What makes it different from other continuing education programs is that the framework incorporates multiple theoretical disciplines and offers a method of case conceptualization that includes various listening and intervention techniques from other treatment approaches. The result is today’s immersive learning experience that combines occasional on-site residency instruction, remote small-group consultation and distance learning to enable participants the ability to continue working in their practices while going through the program.
Topics include:
  • Relational psychodynamic theory
  • Practical clinical listening and intervention techniques
  • Attachment theory
  • Trauma; its effects and treatment
  • Clinical integration of neuroscientific findings
  • Transference and countertransference
  • Psychopharmacology
  • Spirituality and therapy
  • Addressing sexuality
  • Death, dying and end of life
  • Professional ethics

Our Mission

The Wayne Institute for Advanced Psychotherapy is to offer licensed mental health professionals a comprehensive training experience that integrates each practitioner’s skill set with the theories, research and practices shaping contemporary psychotherapy.

The faculty integrates varied treatment modalities into an integrated clinical model applicable to diverse populations and treatment environments.

The goal is for students to emerge with increased competence and confidence, bringing new levels of proficiency and effectiveness to clients they treat, colleagues with whom they consult and communities that they serve.

Our Values

At the Wayne Institute, we believe that becoming the best therapist possible requires a commitment to several professional values. Our curriculum is designed to help program participants integrate these values into their practices:

  • Dedication to developing a genuine, empathetic connection with clients
  • Willingness to be an authentic human while engaging in transformative therapeutic partnerships
  • Commitment to sound clinical theory, always informed and updated by current research
  • Perseverance in learning throughout the entirety of one’s career
  • Openness to looking at one’s own challenges as a clinician; identifying personal blind spots and vulnerabilities

Theoretical Grounding

The curriculum at the Wayne Institute for Advanced Psychotherapy is based on a core set of theoretical concepts that inform the clinical model and techniques we teach. These are:

  • Human beings are hard-wired for growth, resilience and momentum toward authenticity.
  • Human development is fueled by early attachment patterns and processes, which powerfully impact adult life.
  • Difficulties and obstacles in living and relating to others can best be understood not as deficits, but rather as early failures of attunement and/or varying degrees of relational trauma.
  • “Symptoms” are efforts at adaptation.
  • It is the relationship between therapist and client that ultimately allows true, sustainable healing.
  • There is no one “right way” to be in the world. Human beings exist in multiple contexts and deserve to be respected and honored in their complexity.
